Dermatological tests (patch tests)

Dermatological tests, known as patch tests, are crucial in assessing the safety of cosmetics. They are carried out on the final product formulation to check that it does not cause contact allergies. This allows manufacturers to ensure that the cosmetic is safe for the skin and does not cause irritation. This is important both for consumers who want to avoid skin reactions and for manufacturers concerned about meeting the highest safety standards.

Patch testing involves applying small amounts of cosmetic product to the skin of the test subjects – the test subjects. Usually, the inner side of the forearm or the back, where the skin is delicate and more prone to reactions, is tested. The skin is then monitored for 48 to 72 hours to see if contact allergy symptoms, such as redness, itching, swelling or rash, appear. In this way, it is possible to determine precisely whether a product causes skin reactions.

Dermatological testing has many benefits for manufacturers. A positive patch test confirms that the cosmetic meets safety requirements and complies with the applicable standards.

These tests are carried out on various cosmetic products, such as face creams, body lotions, shampoos, conditioners, make-up products and children’s cosmetics. Products intended for people with skin problems, such as acne, psoriasis or eczema, should also undergo such tests to guarantee their safe use.
